CM Himanta Biswa Sarma presenting appointment letters Guwahati: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday distributed appointment letters to 439 candidates appointed to various state govt departments, taking the total number of appointments during the BJP-led govt’s two terms to 1,65,749.
The appointments included positions in the cooperation, labour welfare, public health engineering and water resources departments. Of the 439 appointments, 175 were made in Assam Co-operative Apex Bank on Sunday. The labour welfare department appointed 12 insurance medical officers under Employees’ State Insurance scheme to serve 33 dispensaries and hospitals.
The public health engineering department appointed 184 junior engineers, while the water resources department appointed 52 assistant engineers and 16 junior engineers. Sarma said the govt had increased capital expenditure and accelerated recruitment to address unemployment among engineering and polytechnic graduates.
He added that nearly 40% of the state’s approximately four lakh govt employees were now below 40 years of age. Describing transparent recruitment as one of the govt’s major achievements, Sarma termed the present period a “golden era” for Assam, saying candidates could now share their appointment letters publicly without fear of allegations of bribery or political influence.
However, he expressed concern over corruption among newly appointed officers, citing recent cases in which officials were allegedly caught accepting bribes and crores of rupees were recovered from their residences. Urging the recruits to uphold integrity, he said securing a govt job should not be the ultimate goal of life but a means to serve the people.
He cautioned them against pursuing material comforts through dishonest means, warning that corruption could bring humiliation to officials and their families. The chief minister also said the govt had accelerated promotions to create vacancies for fresh recruitment and provide officers with opportunities to reach senior positions.
The new pay commission has begun its work, and salaries would be revised after its report is submitted, he added. Highlighting rapid technological changes, Sarma said artificial intelligence could handle file-noting work in govt offices within the next two to three years. He called upon the newly appointed employees to remain respectful towards their parents, preserve the integrity they demonstrated during their student days and establish themselves as responsible public servants.
