It’s official. The beloved HBO classic Girls — following the lives of Hannah, Marnie, Jessa, and Shoshanna as they try to make it in NYC — is making a comeback. HBO made the announcement earlier this week via a video chat-style post shared to Instagram, with all four of the series main actresses (Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, and Zosia Mamet), and their co-star Andrew Rannells, confirming they are on board to film five new episodes of the hit show.
The actors teased that production for the mini reboot would start next summer, so it’s possible we may see the girls gracing our screens as early as 2028, but no official date has been announced. While the show is known for its comedic, yet heartfelt portrayal of living in Brooklyn in the mid-2010s, garnering a number of awards, accolades, and nominations, its first installment has been criticized in the past for not being an especially accurate representation of the city.
Since the release of Girls , however, there has been an explosion of readily available queer and trans talent based in (or with deep ties) New York City who would absolutely sweep house if added to the roster, giving the revival a chance to make the show feel incredibly textured, lived-in, raw, and real.
So, here are seven LGBTQ+ actors who I think would make excellent additions to the reboot cast: Anania Michael Izquierdo This one is a no-brainer. With her quick wit, hilarious comedic timing, and penchant for calling shit out when she sees it, Anania would bring refreshing energy to the revival.
Perhaps we see Hannah leave her teaching job upstate for something in the city and her new co-worker, played by the Gaydar host, is a teacher by day and a social media presence/performer/internet personality by night. Also: Hannah Helene Horvath on an episode of Gaydar in the park?
Gold. Elliot Page Slaven Vlasic/Getty Images In a 2027 reboot of Girls , I just know — or I hope, rather — that we’ll be seeing a whole lot of Bushwick. Imagine Elliot Page as a hot trans bookstore or coffee shop owner who manages to catch the eye of one of our leading ladies?
I think yes. We’ve seen him take on fantastically complex roles in Juno , Inception , The Odyssey , and more. I just know he could turn on the charm if cast.
Conrad Ricamora Conrad Ricamora in Oh, Mary! Emilio Madrid A series regular for much of How to Get Away With Murder , Ricamora played a computer hacker who eventually ends up marrying one of the main characters. He’s also made a splash on stage having performed in all manner of productions like Soft Power , The Laramie Project , A Chorus Line , Oh, Mary! , and more.
Given his knack for musical theater, I’d say that a run-in with Marnie, who’s a musician and singer, makes total sense to me. A music exec? A headliner for a band Marnie opens for?
The possibilities are endless. I think Ricamora could pull it off. Or maybe just maybe, if Andrew Rannells’ Elijah doesn’t already have a boyfriend or husband...
Just sayin.’ Samira Wiley Bruce Glikas/Getty Images Though there is some queer subtext in Girls , none of our four main characters are explicitly queer. But in this day in age, I feel like at least one of them’s got to be a little bendy. That being said, I could most definitely see a late-in-life queer awakening happening on the show, perhaps a bit less of a disaster than And Just Like That...
’s Miranda/Che Diaz storyline. Samira Wiley , known for her roles in Orange Is the New Black and The Handmaid’s Tale lived in NYC for over a decade, naming the West Village as a place she liked to people-watch. Do I smell a slick Cubbyhole or Henrietta Hudson cameo with Wiley as DJ or bartender?
Yes. Yes, I do. Plus, Wiley’s OITNB co-star Danielle Brooks was a guest star on Girls !
Indya Moore Elisabetta A. Villa/Getty Images A Bronx native who lived in every NYC borough while growing up, Moore may just know more about NYC than anyone else on this list, including our main characters. I could definitely see Moore playing a character who clocks the girls for doing something or saying something transplant-y.
Her role as Angel Evangelista on FX’s Pose , also set in NYC, was incredibly moving and earnest, with some serious mugs, so I think she could definitely hold her own on this HBO reboot. Rosie O’Donnell Getty Images Given that O’Donnell hails from Commack in Long Island and still retains much of her New York accent, this feels like a natural pairing.
Though I can’t say for sure who she’d play, I feel like she’s gotta be in this reboot somewhere. If Hannah moves back to the city, maybe O’Donnell plays her new neighbor, a longtime resident of the building with whom she has a hot-and-cold relationship with. I know O’Donnell can play non-nonsense well.
See: A League of Their Own (both the television show and film), Now And Then, The L Word: Generation Q, etc. Cynthia Nixon Raymond Hall/Getty Images We know NYC looks good on Nixon: Not only did she play Miranda Hobbes for six seasons on Sex And The City , reprising her role on the reboot, And Just Like That... for an additional three, she also plays a series regular on The Gilded Age .
Plus, Nixon has gone on the record saying that she has only ever lived in NY, residing in the Upper West Side until she was 40. Then she moved downtown for 11 years with her wife Christine Marinoni, and now lives in Kips Bay. In addition to loving living in NYC, Nixon also ran for governor in 2018 under the Working Families Party.
If that’s not dedication to your home turf, I don’t know what is. Maybe in the Girls universe, Cynthia Nixon is the mayor. Only time will tell.
