The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has urged African nations to accelerate cross-border co-ordination and bolster health security measures as cases of Ebola continue to spread across the continent. Addressing a virtual emergency meeting of African Health Ministers, Africa CDC Director-General Dr Jean Kaseya warned that the escalating threat demands heightened vigilance, stricter cross-border surveillance, and enhanced protection for frontline healthcare workers.
Cases have already been confirmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, and Nigeria. Since the outbreak was designated a public health emergency of continental security, member states have implemented targeted containment measures. However, the continent’s public health agency cautioned that the evolving nature of the crisis necessitates sustained political commitment and unified regional strategy to prevent further cross-border transmission.
Despite the growing threat, Kaseya expressed confidence in the continent’s response mechanism, pointing out that Africa possesses the technical expertise and institutional capacity required to curb the outbreak and safeguard lives. –ChannelAfrica–
