Orkin based its rankings on new residential rodent treatments from Aug. 9, 2025, through Aug. 9, 2026.

The company said cities can provide rodents with food, water and protected places to nest. Los Angeles topped the list, followed by Chicago, New York City and San Francisco. Cedar Rapids was one of five cities new to the top 50 this year.

Orkin recommends sealing cracks and gaps around homes, keeping food from being left outside, reducing clutter that could provide nesting spots and watching for signs of rodents, including droppings, gnaw marks, burrows or scampering noises. The company also advises homeowners to fix leaks, check trash containers for damage and seal openings around vents, pipes and foundations.
