Huawei Consumer Business Group Chairman Richard Yu recently confirmed that China is developing EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography) tools for advanced chips. However, this development will take some time to turn into a reality. Richard Yu attended the International Media Roundtable on September 29 and discussed many topics, including LogicFolding chip expansion, Mate XT 2 global debut, Ascend semiconductors, HarmonyOS growth, and more.
While concluding the interview, media asked Richard how the new chip tech changes hardware performance and whether the company needs more Chinese capabilities in other aspects of chipmaking, like EUV, to stay ahead in the technology race. The Chairman responded that on-device computing power for mobile chips has become significantly valuable in the AI era to process tasks rapidly.

Thus, more advanced processes will always be required to increase computing power for chipsets. As for EUV tools, Huawei said that China is developing such technologies for advanced chips. However, there is still some time before the country can use such cutting-edge chipmaking equipment.
“EUV tools are certainly key to manufacturing advanced chips. China is currently working on these tools, but right now we’re still relying on DUV domestically.” Yu added that the LogicFolding design concept is just an approach to improve the company’s capabilities at times when it can’t access certain technologies.
Besides the restrictions, the Chairman says Huawei has adopted a system engineering approach to continuously optimize the overall performance, at the same time, compensating for not having access to more advanced processes.
