Marco Bezzecchi Marco Bezzecchi believes Jorge Martin can still fight for the MotoGP world title despite his injury at the Australian Grand Prix putting his championship hopes in danger. Martin crashed during Saturday’s sprint race at Phillip Island and fractured his wrist. The injury ruled him out of Sunday's race and raised doubts over his participation in next week's Malaysian Grand Prix.
Jorge Martin’s MotoGP title hopes suffer blow, Marco Bezzecchi remains hopeful Jorge Martin was in second place during the 13-lap sprint when he suffered a high-speed crash at Turn 8 on lap eight. The 2024 world champion had started fourth on the grid and was fighting at the front alongside his main title rival, Marc Marquez.
Marco Bezzecchi expressed his disappointment over the Spaniard's crash but said the championship fight was far from over. “It's a real shame for Jorge, the team and everyone at Aprilia, because he was doing a great job,” Bezzecchi said on Saturday according to Crash.net. “Obviously it's not over yet. As we've seen before in this championship, anything can happen. I want to send him a big hug,” he added.
Martin had entered the Australian Grand Prix leading the championship by two points. His crash has now put Marquez in a stronger position as the season approaches its final stage. Marco Bezzecchi faces an uphill title battle Marco Bezzecchi was once more than 30 points clear at the top of the championship this season.
At the Italian Grand Prix, Marquez was 102 points behind him. The situation has now changed significantly. Bezzecchi sits third in the standings, 50 points behind Marc Marquez.
Martin's recovery will be important for Aprilia's hopes of challenging for the title. If the Spaniard remains sidelined for an extended period, Bezzecchi could become the team's main contender in the closing races. ID@undefined Caption not available.
Despite the setback, Bezzecchi remains hopeful that Martin can return and make the championship fight interesting again. The setback has given Marc Marquez a major advantage in the title race. The Ducati rider now leads the standings by 10 points, with five rounds remaining in the season.
However, Bezzecchi has refused to write off Martin's chances. Bezzecchi also had a challenging Saturday at Phillip Island. The Italian struggled to find speed in the mixed conditions during qualifying and could manage only ninth place on the grid.
His problems continued in the early stages of the sprint, when he dropped outside the points. However, he recovered well to finish fourth. The Aprilia rider was unhappy with his qualifying performance but was pleased with his fightback in the sprint.
“As for today, I'm not happy with qualifying. Unfortunately, I couldn't put together a lap quick enough to start further up the grid. That's disappointing, because I was quite competitive in the wet and in the dry, but in the mixed conditions in qualifying I couldn't find the speed.
I'm happy with the sprint, though. I really enjoyed it,” he said. Also read: MotoGP: Marc Marquez beats Jorge Martin to win Australian Grand Prix sprint
