Skip to main Sat, October 24, 2026 at 5:44 PM UTC The Vatican said on Wednesday, October 21, that the Pope's lung cancer surgery was successful and no further treatment is required. In a bulletin shared with CNN, officials detailed the Pope's lung cancer surgery and said doctors removed localized pulmonary adenocarcinoma based on final histological and molecular analyses.
The Lung Cancer Foundation of America notes pulmonary adenocarcinoma is the most common form of lung cancer in the United States. Tests during the October 11 right-lung lobe removal at Rome's Gemelli Hospital confirmed the diagnosis, announced on X on October 13. The Pope was discharged on October 17 after a 90-minute procedure.
He later led the Sunday Angelus from the Apostolic Palace.
