A historic globe used by General Dwight Eisenhower during World War II was reportedly broken as Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth ’s staff tried to move it into his office. The massive globe suffered a massive crack when it was dropped during the move, the Washington Post reports. The globe used by Dwight Eisenhower was seriously damaged by Pete Hegseth’s staff.
Washington Post Hegseth had requested the globe be moved into his office. The Post reports that normally moving a historical item in the Pentagon is a deliberate process by trained curators. But his own staff tried to move the 76cm-wide globe instead, breaking it in the process.
The move happened on February 3, when history staffers working at the Pentagon had been furloughed in a government shutdown. The shutdown ended on the same day as the blunder. The Post reports a source blamed “an apparent lack of patience” for the accident.
Democrats have used the debacle to make wry criticisms of Hegseth. "Hegseth drops the ball — quite literally, this time," Congressman Troy Carter said. "Trump and Hegseth sure know how to break things.
They've broken ties with our allies, broken our economy, and broken American families' bank accounts. Congressman Mark Pocan remarked: "Sec. Hegseth’s staff breaking Eisenhower’s globe is another example of this administration breaking things for no reason." Dwight Eisenhower led the US military on the Western Front during World War II.
Nine Archives Eisenhower used the globe when he was a general during World War II. He oversaw the Allied invasion of France on D-Day and the subsequent advance into Germany, ending the war. He was elected president in 1952 and served two terms.
He is generally regarded as one of the best Republican presidents. Hegseth is already under scrutiny over his behaviour and decisions as Defence Secretary. A firebrand conservative congressman filed articles of impeachment against Hegseth over the Iran war last month.
Kentucky Representative Thomas Massie announced the impeachment attempt, accusing Hegseth of high crimes and misdemeanours . Massie accused Hegseth of starting the war with Iran unlawfully and incurring unnecessary civilian casualties. Massie's impeachment bid is unlikely to succeed given Republicans retain a majority in both houses of Congress.
