The Samsung Health app is getting a pretty major update this week with support for new coaches for sleep and running, as well as support for scanning meals to track calories and macros. Starting with its new coaches, Samsung Health will now offer tips and help build checklists to improve their sleep quality, as well as getting analysis on their sleep tracking data (from Galaxy Watch or Ring) to identify trends.

Samsung explains : Informed by principles of behavioral sleep science, the program gives users daily habit checklists and sleep tips — supporting users in building routines around everyday wellness, such as avoiding screens an hour before bed, skipping late caffeine and stretching outdoors after waking up.

Users can also enjoy more intuitive and detailed analysis reports. The new pentagon-shaped Sleep Balance graph consolidates five key aspects of sleep indicators —sleep time, sleep regularity, awake time during the night, sleep satisfaction, and Energy Score— to provide an at-a-glance view of sleep trends and areas that may warrant attention, based on data collected or inputted through sleep coaching.

Beyond that, Samsung Health’s Running Coach is also getting upgrades with new training levels, a social media sharing feature, and deeper integration with Strava. This includes importing Strava running, trail, and cycling routes into Samsung Health. The other big addition here, at least for users in the US, is “Scan Meal.” This new beta feature allows users to take a photo of their meal and have Samsung Health leverage AI resources to identify the food and the serving size and provide an estimate of calories and macros.

This isn’t some wild new idea – Google Health does the same – but it’s certainly convenient if you’re already invested in Samsung Health. This also comes with a new “Diet Score” feature that helps you adjust your diet to support goals such as eating vegetables, upping protein, or limiting sugar and processed foods.

Samsung says: Using data inputted into the feature, users also receive a Diet Score, calculated through a Samsung nutrition assessment model. Similar to the Sleep and Energy Scores, which utilize on-device and cloud-based algorithms to analyze users’ activity data, the Diet Score is categorized into four tiers — Needs Attention, Fair, Good, and Excellent — to provide users with a general snapshot of certain aspects of their eating habits.

The diet data that is input is analyzed through seven focused dimensions, spanning food groups and beverage and food habits, guiding users to manage their food intake to support diet choices like eating vegetables and proteins while limiting sugar-sweetened beverages and ultra-processed foods.
