The former captain revealed in early January 2015 that he would leave at the end of the season, ending his 25-year association with the club. Asked if it was a shame Salah did not see out his contract at Anfield, Gerrard said : “I don’t think that every footballer necessarily has to finish their career at a club where they’ve shone for so long.” He then listed what he considers important in the later stages of a career.
“I think what’s important when you get to the latter stages your career is that you continue to enjoy it; that a manager appreciates you; that you’re still starting football matches.” Gerrard also pointed to his own exit from Liverpool. “I was in a similar situation myself with Brendan Rodgers and no hard feelings and all due respect, I think it’s important that you see your career out where you’re enjoying it, you’re still playing and you’re still contributing and you feel important.” Salah’s final season at Liverpool had been difficult.
After being an unused substitute in a 3-3 draw at Leeds on December 6, he said he had been thrown “under the bus” and that he had no relationship with then head coach Arne Slot. Liverpool dismissed Slot after the season ended and appointed Andoni Iraola as head coach. Gerrard has spoken about Salah’s exit before.
In April, he said the timing was right and that it was in everyone’s best interests. He also said he had urged Salah not to leave under a cloud. Mohamed Salah left Liverpool as the club’s third-highest scorer, with 257 goals in 442 appearances.
His 191 Premier League goals are a record for a Liverpool player. In August, he signed a two-year contract with Trabzonspor of Turkey on a free transfer. He has scored seven goals in six Super Lig appearances, including a hat-trick in a 4-0 win over Galatasaray on September 19. @sportbible 🗣️ “Mo’s lucky I haven’t put myself in” 😂 Steven Gerrard shares his Liverpool Mount Rushmore 🔴🐐 @Overlap Daily ♬ original sound – SPORTbible Support DaveOCKOP and enjoy the site completely ad-free .
