Why Lewis Dobbin could be Southampton’s difference-maker at West Brom

With Cyle Larin likely out, Lewis Dobbin could again lead Southampton ’s line at West Brom tonight, and his away-day output hints at a decisive role. According to BBC Sport, he has been involved in five goals, three scored and two assisted, across his last seven league away starts.

Tonda Eckert has never lost to West Brom as Saints manager, and will hope that holds at the Hawthorns against James Morrison’s side. West Brom sit one point above Southampton in the Championship. Eckert’s broader record is strong, with seven defeats in 46 league matches.

Dobbin arrived for £nine million, a fee that sharpened scrutiny. He had 12 Championship goals when he signed, 10 for Preston North End in 2025/26, plus eight assists. Expectations rose accordingly.

Settling on the South Coast has proved uneven. He has one league goal from 11 games for Southampton, though he did bag the decisive third at West Ham in their last away outing, a simple close-range finish. Many would prefer Larin leading the line, yet in his absence Dobbin could again be the difference for Eckert’s team.

The ex-Aston Villa forward also knows the Baggies well after 18 goalless appearances on loan there. If chances fall kindly, he might just haunt his former club. “Artificial intelligence was used to assist in creating this article based on reporting from the original source quoted.” View publisher imprint Southampton predicted XI v QPR: Dobbin keeps his place, Larin and Downes wait OffsAIde Southampton visit West Brom as fourth host fifth OffsAIde Léo Scienza desperate to end Southampton goal drought at the Hawthorns OffsAIde Five West Brom threats Southampton must silence to win at the Hawthorns OffsAIde Southampton’s Hawthorns record hints at another away success against West Brom OffsAIde See More News Mentioned in this article West Bromwich Albion Southampton Lewis Norman Dobbin Cyle Larin Predicting which clubs the summer's biggest free agents will sign for There are still some massive names who are set to become free agents in the summer, with some high-profile deals due to expire at the end of next month. As speculation...
