Growing up in Gothenburg, Sweden, he would visit the symphony orchestra twice a week to watch orchestral performances. He began playing the piano aged six and the violin four years later, becoming enamoured with string quartets by Haydn , Mozart , and Beethoven . Together with his brother, who played the cello, he dreamed of forming a string quartet.
It soon turned out the world had different plans for him. Whilst studying at the Stockholm Royal College of Music, Blomstedt was chosen out of all his peers to conduct Brahms ’ epic Requiem – and so his career as a conductor began. He went on to study at some of the world’s most renowned institutions, honing his conducting craft with Jean Morel at Juilliard, and Leonard Bernstein at Tanglewood.
