City Hall in Limoges, France, burned during national protests Police in France have arrested a suspect accused of burning down the historic city hall in the city of Limoges during massive national protests . The 34-year-old suspect is linked to far-left groups and was previously on a French national security watchlist because of "acts of violence against public officials," reports the BBC , citing reports in French media.
The suspect has not been named. The building's roof and belfry collapsed in the fire, and while its facade is still standing, it's also in danger of collapse, per Le Monde . The French newspaper says the arson has become a symbol of the violent riots, which grew out of demonstrations over public services and the rising cost of living.
Smithsonian calls the building, which opened its doors in 1883, an "architectural wonder" and "a prime example of late 19th-century French architecture and civic pride." Reuters adds that the arson has also struck a chord in the nation because it calls to mind the near destruction of Notre Dame by fire in 2019.
It's possible the suspect will face even more serious charges if the arson is deemed a terror attack. Read These Next What happens in Vegas did not stay in Vegas for this Canadian. Strikes on Russian data centers paralyze daily life.
