Channel 7 has followed Married At First Sight's lead by turning off social media comments for a highly anticipated My Kitchen Rules episode. Controversial couple, Jane and Shane , who have drawn criticism this season for their behaviour toward other contestants, finally hosted their Instant Restaurant on Monday night.
Many viewers were keen to see if the pair could pull out the goods after putting down others. However, Australians didn't get much of a chance to give their two cents about the food on the show's official social media platforms, such as Instagram and TikTok. That was because the comments section was turned off for nearly every post.
The same thing was done during several particularly controversial episodes on MAFS earlier this year. RELATED: Dr Jennifer Beckett is a social media governance expert and University of Melbourne lecturer, and she previously told Yahoo Lifestyle that turning off comments is a very common practice these days.
"It can be quite a controversial move because people feel like you're censoring them, but I wish more Australians actually knew the legal requirements of the job," she said. Brands and companies will do this for a variety of reasons, with defamation and legal risks at the top of the list.
Dr Beckett said that shows such as MAFS likely get far too many comments for moderators to keep up with, and it's just easier to stop them at the source. Yahoo Lifestyle has contacted Channel 7 for comment. Do you have an MKR opinion?

On-camera behaviour quickly led to insults flying on online fan forums, with terms such as "snob", "dumb" and "doing my head in" being used to describe the competitors.
"A friendly reminder from the MKR team. Please be kind and respectful toward contestants," the network said. "We love seeing how invested you all are in the competition, just remember there are real people behind every dish.
"Keep it kind, respectful and fun." What happened on MKR last night? Jane and Shane's Instant Restaurant ended with the duo getting booted from the show. The pair's first course included Duck Chawanmushi, which is an egg-like custard.
However, the consistency was compared to vomit as guests panned the dish. Things didn't get much better when they cooked pigeon for their main, which ended up being far too dry and was labelled a "disaster". "You talked a big game and you desecrated your pigeons," contestant Alisha told them.
Jane and Shane's ambitious three-course meal did not go down well. (Channel 7) Fellow home chef Angus said the bird looked as though it had "been in the crematorium". Colin confirmed the pigeon was overcooked, while Manu said he couldn't find anything positive to say about it. Their only saving grace was their Tomato Sour dessert.
Interestingly, the only post about the three-course meal that didn't have comments turned off was the main dish. Overall, Jane and Shane got a score of 50 out of 110, the lowest score of the first round of the show, and were sent packing. Want the latest lifestyle and entertainment news?
