Hyderabad : Volunteers of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) were briefly detained by police near Charminar on Friday night while participating in the party’s nationwide ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ campaign, organised in solidarity with two party members arrested in Delhi earlier this week. Around 15 volunteers gathered near Charminar and unfurled the national flag as part of the campaign.

Similar programmes were reportedly held in Warangal and Armoor. The event was also intended to protest the preventive detention of CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke in Delhi on Friday. According to party members, police questioned the volunteers about permissions for the gathering before detaining them.

The CJP maintained that the programme was a peaceful demonstration aimed at expressing solidarity with its members and allowing volunteers to pose with the national flag. “The objective was simple, which is to hold the Indian flag, take a photograph, and express our solidarity peacefully.

Why can’t we proudly display our own National Flag in our own country?” a CJP Telangana member said. Charminar inspector T Rambabu said a group of six persons arrived near Charminar around 7.30 pm and sought to unfurl the national flag. “They claimed to be from CJP and wanted to unfurl the national flag.

We told there is a procedure and police have to be informed in advance to get permission for any such activity in a crowded public place. Subsequently, they left the place. No case has been registered,” he said.
