(AP File Photo/Petros Karadjias) NICOSIA – The Cyprus House of Representatives adopted, as a matter of urgency, a resolution condemning the illegal Turkish-Libyan memorandum and calling for the immediate adoption of European measures against Turkey.

The resolution was submitted by Nicolas Papadopoulos and Christiana Erotokritou on behalf of the DIKO party and was approved with 44 votes in favor. Among other things, the resolution unequivocally condemns the decision of the Libyan House of Representatives to ratify the illegal Turkish-Libyan memorandum, which contravenes the Law of the Sea, disregards the sovereign rights of third countries, and attempts to impose faits accomplis in the Eastern Mediterranean.

The Cyprus House of Representatives declared that the approval of the memorandum does not remedy the illegality of its content, nor does it create legal effects to the detriment of third countries, including EU member states. It also condemns Turkey’s systematic attempt to impose unilateral and revisionist claims in the Eastern Mediterranean, undermining international legality, security, and stability in the region.

It also calls on the Council of the EU to proceed without delay with the examination and adoption of specific, proportionate, and effective restrictive measures against Turkey, in accordance with European and International Law. Furthermore, through its resolution, the Cyprus House of Representatives reaffirms its full solidarity with the Hellenic Republic and its unwavering commitment to defending the sovereignty and sovereign rights of both the Republic of Cyprus and the Hellenic Republic, on the basis of International Law and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

House President Anita Demetriou stated that the resolution “sends an important message of unity and determination.” Key Meeting with Guterres, Government Spokesman Says NEW YORK.
