Eli Lilly LLY has another weapon in the diabetes and obesity drug race. Shares rose 1.21% to $1,297.37 at 11:24 a.m. ET on October 28 as Reuters reported that its experimental retatrutide beat Ozempic on weight loss and blood sugar control.
The comparison used Ozempic's highest approved diabetes dose, giving Lilly a potentially powerful selling point if retatrutide clears the remaining development and regulatory hurdles. The 80-week trial in adults with type 2 diabetes delivered a striking weight-loss gap. Patients receiving 12 mg of retatrutide lost an average of 47.4 pounds, versus 20.9 pounds with 2 mg of Ozempic, according to Lilly's results.
But the bigger payoff came with a tolerability trade-off: adverse events prompted 7.9% of retatrutide patients to stop treatment, compared with 2.7% on Ozempic. That 5.2-percentage-point gap puts a practical question behind the headline numbers: how many patients can stay on the drug long enough to capture its benefits?
Lilly's financial snapshot shows why expectations already run high. A GuruFocus GF Score of 97/100, with strong profitability and growth readings, sits alongside a $1.22 trillion market value and a price-to-earnings ratio of 44.08. That combination suggests investors are already paying for substantial future success, leaving less room for development setbacks.
Retatrutide remains investigational, and stronger efficacy alone will not settle the commercial case. Detailed peer-reviewed findings, regulatory decisions and patients' ability to remain on treatment will help determine whether this trial win becomes a durable earnings driver.
