Live In The D Home decor is a quality-of-life issue, Local 4 expert says Decorating your home isn’t just about looks - it’s about how you live, according to Local 4 Lifestyle Editor Jon Jordan. “Visual science confirms that home decor is actually a quality-of-life issue,” Jordan said, noting the impact extends beyond physical comfort into mood and sense of self.

Jordan broke the concept down into four basic home styles: traditional, modern, transitional and eclectic. Traditional leans on soft colors and intricate details like skirted upholstery and painted furniture. Modern favors minimalism, abstract art and simple shapes, with “New Deco” emerging as a fresh trend.

Transitional blends the two, softening modern’s geometric edges with traditional warmth. Eclectic, meanwhile, mixes it all together into what Jordan calls a “highly edited mishmash.” Achieving a magazine-worthy look doesn’t require a big budget, Jordan added. “Magazine-worthy does not mean expensive,” he said.

As proof, Jordan pointed to a set of chairs he refinished himself using just a hand sander and citrus oil - transforming a secondhand find into something stylish without the hefty price tag.
