Houston-based Japanese grill moving into shuttered S.A. buffet

A sign for Dimassi's Mediterranean Buffet still stands in front of the incoming Shogun Japanese Grill & Sushi Bar. Polly Anna Rocha/MySA Houston-based Dimassi's Mediterranean Buffet closed its San Antonio location off of SW Loop 410 in 2023, and the building it once occupied has been empty ever since.

This year, the property has been undergoing construction to make way for another chain, also hailing from Houston. Shogun Japanese Grill & Sushi Bar is in the middle of building out its first San Antonio location in the former Dimassi's restaurant. The growing Texas restaurant chain mentions the Alamo City location on its website, which labels the outpost as "coming soon." MySA contacted Shogun on social media to confirm additional details about the incoming business, and we will update this story when we receive a response.

Polly Anna Rocha/MySA MySA visited the site for the new Shogun Japanese Grill & Sushi Bar on Monday, October 12. The building appeared to be in the middle of a major overhaul, with scaffolding around the perimeter and fresh wood being installed on the exterior.

No Shogun signs were up yet, and an old Dimassi's sign was still standing, with some visibility from the nearby highways. More For You An August 2025 filing with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation indicated that Shogun is building onto the property to make space for an additional dining room area.

At the time, the remodeling was estimated to cost $350,000 and was scheduled for completion by March 1, 2026. MySA will continue to monitor the restaurant as it nears opening in San Antonio.
