The team created Mass Effect , Dragon Age, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic , and many other classics.

After a wave of mourning across the industry , a recent Bloomberg report claimed that EA shut down the studio, so the publisher could focus its resources on Star Wars Battlefront 3 instead of a rival sci-fi title in a new Mass Effect. It seems that we’ll soon know more details about what exactly went down.

Deadline just revealed that BioWare is getting a documentary film by Shane Fennessey and Adam Scorgie for Canada’s Super Channel. Massive Effect: The BioWare Story will document the Edmonton-based studio’s journey, starting with its founding in 1995 before diving into the team's tremendous success with several hit RPGs.

The movie is being planned for a major film festival run and world premiere next year. Akash Sherman ( Clara ) will write and direct Massive Effect , with Fennessey Films and Score G Productions co-producing . The crew began filming two years before the studio was closed, and as Deadline puts it, “this allowed the filmmakers to capture BioWare’s finale chapter, as the news of the studio’s closure reverberated through the gaming industry.” Who will be featured in the film?

The movie will include interviews with several of the most important figures in BioWare’s history, including its three co-founders, Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk, and Augustine Yip. Other prominent names include Casey Hudson, game director of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect; Commander Shepard voice actor Jennifer Hale; former EA CEO John Riccitiello; and BioWare developers like Mark Darrah, David Gaider, Drew Karpyshyn, Aaryn Flynn, Mac Walters, Trent Oster, James Ohlen and Caroline Livingstone.

“When the production team asked for our blessing to tell the BioWare story, we were honored and deeply moved,” said BioWare co-founders Muzyka and Zeschuk in a statement. “BioWare was never just about the logo or the building. It was about the stories brought to life by the amazing people on our dev teams, and the fans who defended those worlds, championed them and carried them forward.

We’re proud this film honors those who made it all possible. The best stories never really end. They live on in our memories and wait for someone to pick them up again.” Free sign-up Get Polygon’s Wishlister newsletter A weekly cheat sheet to what you’ll eventually love to play.

With so many insiders interviewed for the movie, hopefully we’ll learn more about what led to BioWare’s slow collapse, from the unsuccessful release of Mass Effect: Andromeda to the doomed live-service game like Anthem . The movie may also raise awareness about an ongoing petition for the Canadian government to step in and save the studio from closure .

While that remains a long shot, the leaked trailer for Mass Effect: Universe has many hopeful that we haven’t seen the last of this beloved series.
