One of the younger stars of the game continues to amaze. The New York Islanders and Nashville Predators had an exciting battle on Tuesday night, with the two teams going to overtime tied 3-3. The Islanders, desperate for the extra point, threw defenseman Matthew Schaefer out right off the hop and kept him there.
The reigning Calder Trophy winner played the entire overtime period, which included a power play for the Isles. Despite not being able to find the winner in the extra frame, Schaefer’s team ended up coming away with the victory in a shootout. He ended up leading all skaters with 32:16 of ice time, an exceptional effort for a player many believe will carry the torch for years to come.
On Wednesday’s edition of Daily Faceoff LIVE , Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton discuss Schaefer’s impressive effort in a victorious outcome. Tyler Yaremchuk: [In OT] They go back and forth for the first couple of minutes. Arm shoots up, delayed penalty.
It was Forsberg who tripped Matthew Schaefer. The Islanders kind of got like 15-20 seconds to cycle the puck around on a delayed penalty, which I think kind of helped Schaefer catch his breath a little bit. Then, ahead of the power play, there was 2:14 left in overtime ahead of that power play.
The Islanders called a timeout to get Schaefer rested and back on the ice. Pretty insane he was able to do that. One that’s honestly probably just as impressive as Matthew Schaefer is Ryan O’Reilly having a 4:27 shift, where he was killing a penalty for the final 90 seconds of that...that is way more exhausting than just being keen on the power play like Matt Schaefer was, but in all seriousness, those are some wild numbers.
Carter Hutton: The tanks that are on some of these players, especially with D-men...it was so impressive. I thought late in the overtime, he made a defensive play despite the extended shift that was so impressive as well. Like, he still had gas in the tank.
I guess when I look at this team to be in the situation that they’re in, having the lead and then blowing the lead...to being able to find a way to win a hockey game. If you lose this game, you’re sitting here tomorrow as a New York Islander, you’re very stressed about this game and losing a three-goal lead.
But Matthew Schaefer was the story of the night, and he’s only going to get better. You can watch the full segment and entire episode here... View cap summary for:
