Amazon-owned Ring, which plans to sell the new device in the United States, has unveiled its first smart lock with a manual emergency power mechanism. If the device’s battery runs out, the owner will be able to turn a special knob several times to generate enough power to open the door, TechCrunch reports .

Once inside the home, the battery pack can be removed and charged in the usual way. Ring founder Jamie Siminoff said the idea arose when he was looking for a lock for a vacation home that is used infrequently. He was concerned that the battery could run out and guests or relatives would be unable to get inside.
