He’s back! Any questions? David S.

Pumpkins, the wacky, random weirdo brought to life by none other than actor Tom Hanks, made his return to the “Saturday Night Live” stage Oct. 31 for an extra special Halloween cold open. The jack-o-lantern suit-wearing, singing character, who last made his appearance on the sketch comedy show four years ago, gave it his all — like he always does.

“I’m David Pumpkins, maaaaan !” Mr. Pumpkins exclaims, eliciting cheers from the studio audience. In the sketch, cast members Jeremy Culhane and Grace Reiter take a spooky mausoleum tour, guided by Keenan Thompson.

While they’re first greeted by some quintessential scary characters like the infamous Lizzie Borden, the ride takes a weird turn when they run into David. David S. Pumpkins — flanked by his two dancing skeleton friends, played by cast member Mikey Day and former “SNL” alum Bobby Moynihan — performs his signature Halloween routine.

Though Culhane and Reiter attempt to get a little clarity around who the heck this David guy really is, they’re given little explanation. They’re simply told that he’s a “Halloween guy.” David S. Pumpkins’ shenanigans is interrupted by Donald Trump, played by James Austin Johnson, who rants about the upcoming midterms.

He’s joined by Nicki Minaj, played by Saidah Belo-Osagie, and former press secretary Katie Zacharia, played by Veronika Slowikowska. David S. Pumpkins speaks again at the end of the cold open to deliver the final iconic line: “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!” Mr.

Pumpkins first charmed — and annoyed — audiences when he made his debut in 2016 during an episode that was hosted by Hanks himself. The sketch, “Haunted Elevator” included David S. Pumpkins’ signature cartoon-y dance music and moves, supported by Day and Moynihan.

Since, the Halloween Guy has made a handful of appearances on the show. Each time, no one really understands why he’s there. And that’s OK!
