Tanker damaged and catches fire east of Strait of Hormuz

A tanker caught fire after sustaining damage east of the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, the Iranian Navy said, reporting that the vessel had switched off its tracking systems while attempting to pass through what it described as a restricted area. The navy’s public relations office said monitoring teams detected the tanker around midday after it disabled its tracking systems and attempted to navigate through the area, Anadolu Agency reported.

The statement did not identify the vessel, explain what caused the damage and fire, or provide details about the crew or any potential casualties. The incident comes amid heightened attention to maritime security around the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and a major route for global energy shipments.
