We have reached the WTA Wuhan final, the penultimate WTA 1000 event of the 2026 season, as Maja Chwalinska squares off against Sonay Kartal in what is likely the biggest match of their respective careers. Both women are playing some superb tennis, setting up what should be a terrific final.

As always, we at LWOT offer our preview and prediction. But who do you think will raise the title? Maja Chwalinska vs Sonay Kartal Head-to-Head: first meeting Maja Chwalinska was a relatively unknown coming into the season.

Everything changed at Roland Garros . Chwalinska reached the French Open final, vaulting her ranking from No. 114 to No.

22. She went 4-7 in her next seven events, but has found her form again at WTA Wuhan. Sonay Kartal missed over six months this season due to injury.

She returned last month and has hit the ground running. The 28-year-old Brit has looked terrific at WTA Wuhan, beating Elina Svitolina, Belinda Bencic, and Jasmine Paolini. If she wins on Sunday, Kartal will vault over 100 spots in the rankings after a single event.

Kartal has raised her level at WTA Wuhan when it matters most. In her semifinal victory over Jelena Ostapenko, Kartal won two breakers, including 11-9 in the first set. As noted, Chwalinska made her name at the French Open, but this week at WTA Wuhan has proved she is not a one-hit wonder.

Although clay is clearly her preferred surface, the Pole has the groundstrokes to keep pace on a hard court. This is a tough one to pick. Kartal and Chwalinska will both be hungry for what would undoubtedly be the biggest title of their respective careers.

I give the slight edge to the Brit, who is the better hardcourt player and is teeming with confidence after her return from injury. Prediction: Kartal in 3 Main Photo Credit: Susan Mullane – Imagn Images
