A conversational AI that helps assess patients could change how primary-care consultations begin. But before such tools can be trusted with real clinical decisions, researchers need to know how safely and effectively they work with actual patients. Google researchers say their partnership with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center has taken that question into a prospective clinical study of AMIE, Google’s system for medical dialogue and clinical reasoning.

The work, initially described by Google Research, has since been published in The Lancet, according to the researchers. The supplied study details do not specify its results or the number of real-world participants. Moving beyond simulated consultations AMIE’s earlier evaluations focused on simulated settings, including diagnostic challenges and conversations with patient actors.

That work could show how the system performed under controlled conditions, but not whether it could deliver safe, useful interactions in clinical practice. The distinction matters in primary care, where a clinician may need to make sense of a patient’s account alongside documents or images.
