October 10, 2026 | 12:41 am TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Anak Krakatau is again under Level III status (Watch). The volcanic activity in the Sunda Strait has increased. The Geological Agency raised the activity status of Mount Anak Krakatau again on Friday night, October 9, 2026, at 21:00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time).

This status comes less than three weeks after the Geological Agency lowered it to Level II (Caution) on September 21. The latest decision is based on observations from September 21 to October 8, which recorded five eruption earthquakes and eight explosion earthquakes. Additionally, 11 low-frequency earthquakes, 45 many-phase earthquakes, 17 continuous tremors, 31 shallow volcanic earthquakes, and 9 deep volcanic earthquakes were noted.

"Throughout Friday, October 9, 2026, until 19:20, there were nine eruptions with a maximum amplitude of 55 millimeters and an eruption duration of 32 seconds with the height of the eruption column unobserved," said the Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, in a written statement.

With the status returning to Level III, it is again prohibited to approach Mount Anak Krakatau within a five-kilometer radius of the eruption main crater. Neither the public nor visitors are allowed to enter or conduct activities within a one-kilometer radius of the new island in the northwestern or southeastern sectors.

The Geological Agency also called for increased vigilance against lava bomb projectiles, heavy ash rains, lava flows, and the potential for secondary eruptions caused by the heat contact of lava with both seawater and rainwater within a five-kilometer radius of the Anak Krakatau eruption center.

"The community in the coastal areas of Banten and Lampung provinces is urged to remain calm and not to trust rumors about an eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau that could lead to a tsunami, and they can carry out normal activities while always following the guidance of local disaster management agencies," said Lana in a further statement.
