10 October 2026 The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a "Food Alert for Action" instructing caterers, wholesalers, manufacturers, and retailers to immediately withdraw and recall eggs supplied by a Ukrainian food business following the detection of Salmonella Enteritidis .
The contamination was identified by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) during testing carried out as part of a wider investigation into a Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak linked to imported eggs. Whole-genome sequencing confirmed the strain ( S. Enteritidis t5.8998) was genetically distinct from the primary outbreak strain under review; however, it was directly matched to 36 clinical cases of Salmonella infection reported in England in 2026.
According to health and food safety authorities, the affected eggs were primarily distributed to catering supply networks and wholesalers, with limited retail sales in small local shops. Officials emphasized that major UK supermarkets are unaffected, as their egg supplies are domestically produced within the UK.
