The panorama, recorded at 8.30am local Mars time on August 11, shows yardangs on the horizon of Mount Sharp, with the early morning light giving the foreground a striking blue hue.

The yardang layer stretches around 10 miles (16km) across the mountain and scientists are still unsure how it formed, with ancient volcanic ash among the theories. Curiosity is expected to reach the base of the yardangs sometime in 2027, when scientists hope its robotic arm can gather new data about the unusual formations.
